Hydrangea
The Hydrangea Collection, developed with the assistance of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Hydrangea Society, is one of the finest in the Southeast. It contains more than 160 cultivars of Hydrangea macrophylla (both mophead and lacecap types), Hydrangea serrata cultivars (Mountain Hydrangea — a lacecap type from Japan), and our Native Hydrangea arborescens. These peak in late May and June, with stunning blooms of pink, blue and white.
At the same time, climbing hydrangeas (both native and Asian) can be seen in full bloom climbing the trees of the Woodland Shade Garden. July and August are filled with the blossoms of cultivars of Hydrangea paniculata, Hydrangea aspera and Hydrangea involucrata.
Tropical Rotunda
The equatorial regions of the world occupy around 10 percent of Earth's surface and contain more than half of the world's plant and animal species. Many of these regions are under threat from deforestation, climate change and development. The Tropical Rotunda has hundreds of species from these tropical regions.
These collections are a valuable tool for education, research and conservation. They are arranged in communities that provide a living model of specific habitats from selected geographical regions. The collections are themed:
Geographical regions:
Lowland tropical forest: Central America, Central Africa, Southern Mexico, Southeast Asia
Islands of high endemics: Seychelles, Madagascar, Mascarene and the New Zealand, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Comoros Islands
Herb Garden
As part of the Garden's master plan the Herb Garden will expand into the Edible Garden. The Edible Garden, to be completed as the last phase of the Capital Campaign, will include vegetables, herbs, and flowers in a beautifully designed, visually appealing, educational new garden. The Niki in the Garden exhibition has given the Garden the opportunity to begin these changes in the Herb Garden. Although the Herb Garden will temporarily be removed, herbs are included in the areas surrounding the North Courtyard/outdoor café, in new pots adjacent to the Rose Garden and some in the Rose Garden itself.

The Great Okefenokee Swamp
The Great Okefenokee Swamp, one of America’s most fascinating natural areas, is the largest, intact, un fragmented, wilderness Swamp in North America. "Okefenokee" what Seminoles called "Land of Trembling Earth" is approximately 700 square miles located in the southeast corner of Georgia, U.S.A.
The Okefenokee is crisscrossed by over 120 miles of paddle and motor boat trails. It is a major destination for wetlands nature lovers paddlers and boaters. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge offers a controlled and limited number of overnight wilderness paddle trail permits. The overnight paddlers permits are issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (the administrative and management Government agency). A good number of wonderful easy to challenging day use paddle boat only trails and plenty of exciting and fun dual use paddle/motor boat trails are readily available for access without the need of a permit.
