What makes people dizzy when they spin?
Rolling down a hill or spinning around in endless circles causes dizziness or vertigo because hair-like sensory nerve cells in our ears send wrong messages to our brain.
The motions of our bodies are detected by the vestibular system found in the upper part of our inner ear. The vestibular system senses whether we are standing up or lying down.
When we spin in circles or get up too fast from the couch, we feel dizzy and lightheaded due to the vestibular system's nerve reactions to these unusual motions.
Here's how our vestibular system reacts to a slight change in direction when we bend our heads: The vestibular system senses motion through three semicircular canals that are at right angles to one another. Not only do these canals have hair-like sensory nerve cells, but they also contain a fluid called endolymph.
Following the principle of inertia, endolymph resists changes in motion. As a result of this resistance, the endolymph lags behind and stimulates hair cells to send nerve signals to the brain. Our brain interprets the nerve messages and knows which direction the head moved.
However, when we spin, our brain receives mixed messages. The endolymph slowly begins to move in the same direction we are spinning. As time goes by, the endolymph catches up to the rate of speed we are spinning and no longer stimulates the hair-like nerve cells. This causes our brain to quickly adapt to the nerve signals. However, when we stop spinning, the endolymph continues to move and stimulates hair cells in the opposite direction.
These hair cells send wrong messages to the brain making it think that the head is still spinning although it actually has stopped. As a result of this inaccurate signal, we experience dizziness. Eventually, the endolymph stops moving and no more signals are sent to the brain. The brain interprets that the spinning motion has ceased and the dizziness disappears

"Rolling down a hill or spinning around in endless circles causes dizziness or vertigo because hair-like sensory nerve cells in our ears send wrong messages to our brain." My Hair-Like Sensory Nerve Cells was really spinning on Saturday night and they had no idea what was going on!!!! I went to a Haunted House with Owl's son in Kansas City and believe me that was the experience of my lifetime and I got very, very dizzy! We had to walk through a spinning tunnel and I dont have good balance on flat ground anyways (we will blame that on the larger upper chest!) anyways-I dont have good balance on flat ground and they want me to walk through a spinning tunnel...not happening, I had to try it twice cause the first time I fell instantally the second time I made it half way and I fell and that was it, I just rode it out. I hit my head several times and all that I could do was laugh!!!! along with Owl's son and daughter and her boyfriend. Needless to say whenever I got out of there the dark was spinning cause that was all that I could see and I was still going round and round and round!!!!

wow, that sounds dangerous. Couldn't you go around the spinning tunnel? I hope they tell people about it, cause with my bad knee, there is no way I could go thru it. Very strange, hitting your head doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun to me......lmao!

No, you couldn't go around the spinning tunnel...you was suppose to walk through it but I have real bad balance...they give WARNINGS! at the very beginning of the Haunted House before you even pay...and I have to say laying in a tunnel spinning repeatedly over and over again was more fun than seeing the "Dead Baby Guy"

SpyderLady I probally wouldnt laugh about it but,its one of those things that you have to be there and also Cupcake has always been a real clutz when we took the kids to the movies or anywhere She was not allowed to try and hold or carry anything and then try to walk at the same time cause alot of times she would be just standing there and she would manage to fall over anyways. I took her to drs and they done mri's scatscans and I dont know what all and they all said that there wasnt anything wrong (Cupcake has her own theroy though) Shes just one of them fun to pick on and keep around and more than anything you just cant help but LOVE HER so all in all she kinda like Hb and sadsack keep them around so you can rub thier tummies once in awhile and in return they will roll around and show ya afew new tricks.

I am telling you that it isnt my fault that I am a clutz it is the two oversized growths that I have on my chest!!! If you rub my tummy then I will giggle like the Pillsbury doughboy, but I dont have to have my belly rubbed to show you a trick! :-\
