Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. Issues Allergy Alert on Mislabeled Prestige Chocolate Ice Cream

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Jacksonville, FL -- October 5, 2007 -- Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. is recalling one code of its 1.75 quart (1.65 liter) cartons of "Prestige Chocolate Ice Cream" because of a potential error in packaging. Some of the products may have the correct lid identifying the product as chocolate almond, but the "tub" is identified as only chocolate. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. Given this serious issue, the company decided to pull the product from all its stores and encourages customers with any concerns to return the product.

The product comes in an oval 1.75 quart paper carton marked with plant code of 12-356 and an expiration date of JUN 25 08 on a white strip on the side of the carton. The cartons indicate that the product inside is chocolate ice cream while the lid may state that the product is chocolate almond.

The recalled "Prestige Chocolate Ice Cream" was only distributed to Winn-Dixie and Save-Rite stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

The company has not received any reports from customers in connection with this problem.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the almond-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of almonds.

Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by chocolate ice cream cartons getting on the line while chocolate almond was being produced. The Food and Drug Administration has been informed and there is complete cooperation with them in conducting this recall.

Consumers who have purchased 1.75 quart (1.65 liters) cartons of Prestige Chocolate Ice Cream with JUN 25 08 code date are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The cartons indicate that the product inside is chocolate ice cream while the lid may state that the product is chocolate almond.

Consumers with questions or any doubt at all about product in their possession are encouraged to contact the company at 1-866-WINN-DIXIE or return the product to their store for a refund or exchange.

It seems like there is way too much of this going on, but I heard the other day that the recalls for this year are still below that of last year. Now that is scary, because I never heard about so many last year. Just think what all those could have been. Yes, I heard some of them, but nothing like I have this year!!
I think it is finally being put out there for more to know about. If it isn't on the news on TV or radio, there are a lot out there that never hear about recalls!!

USA - Concerns over excessive amounts of lead paint have forced JC-Penny's to recall about 49-thousand Disney Deluxe Winnie The Pooh play sets.

The Chinese - made toys consists of 23 pieces including a baby doll, blanket, playpen, and stroller.

The items were on sale nationwide for two years, starting back in 2005.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is asking parents to please take the playsets away from children and return them to the store for a full refund.

Illinois firm recalls beef patties on E.coli scare

WASHINGTON - J&B Meats Corp. is recalling 173,554 pounds of frozen ground beef products sold under "Topps" and "Sam's Choice" labels due to possible E. coli contamination, the U.S. government said this weekend.

The Coal Valley, Illinois-based company produced the patties in June and distributed them to retail stores nationwide, the U.S. Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, said in a statement.

Agribusiness giant Cargill Inc recalled about 844,812 pounds of frozen beef patties due to possible E. coli contamination earlier this month.


Symptoms of E. coli 0157:H7 illness — the strain associated with the recall — include potentially severe stomach cramps and diarrhea.

The products subject to the latest recall include two-, three-, and eight-pound boxes of beef burgers.

FSIS said the potential problem was discovered after it received a complaint about illness. Consumers with questions should contact the company at 888-734-0451.

Well, I guess I will throw away my patties. I had a box of hamburgers and they have two seal packs in the box. I cooked up one pack of them and threw the box away so I would have more room in the freezer. I have no idea what brand they are. Even if I didn't get sick the first time I cooked them, its just the thought that I have no idea what they are.

Better safe than sorry. I never buy any frozen patties, but the past couple of weeks I haven't went to Burger King, McDonalds, or any of the burger joints. Too skeered.

I have always bought my burger at the local grocery store. The butcher cuts and grinds meat fresh daily.

Serious Head Injuries Prompt Recall of Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats - New Warnings and Instructions to Be Provided To Consumers
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Bumbo “Baby Sitter” Seats

Units: About 1 million

Manufacturer: Bumbo International, of South Africa

Hazard: If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received 28 reports of young children falling out of the Bumbo Baby Sitter seat, including three skull fractures, which occurred when children fell out of chairs that had been placed on tables.

Description: The bottom of the children’s seat is round and flat with a diameter of about 15 inches. It is constructed of a single piece of molded foam and comes in yellow, blue, purple, pink, aqua, and lime green. The seat has leg holes and seat back that wraps completely around the child. On the front of the seat in raised lettering is the word “Bumbo” with the image of an elephant on top. The bottom of the seat has the following words: “Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa Material: Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030.” The back of the seat contains the following “WARNING” – “Never use on a raised surface. Never use as a car seat or bath seat. Designed for floor level use only. Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigorous movement.”

Sold by: Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, USA Babies and various other toy and children’s stores nationwide, and various online sellers, from August 2003 through October 2007 for about $40.

Remedy: Consumers should never use the infant seat on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface. Consumers can contact Bumbo to obtain new warning label stickers and instructions, free of charge. The new warning label will state: “WARNING – Prevent Falls; Never use on any elevated surface.” Consumers should use the Bumbo seat at ground level, but should never leave a child unattended.

Hazard: The snowmobiles’ fuel tanks can crack allowing liquid fuel and fuel vapor to leak, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. In addition, a problem with the throttle cable can lead to loss of speed control, posing a crash hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: Ski-Doo Model Year 2008 MXZ Adrenaline 800R, MXZ X 800R, MXZ TNT 500SS, MXZ Trail 500SS, Summit Everest 154 800R snowmobiles are included in this recall. The model name is located on the side panels. They were sold in black/yellow, yellow, or black/slate.

Connecticut Electric Recalls Counterfeit Square D Circuit Breakers Due To Fire Hazard

Name of Product: Counterfeit "Square D" Circuit Breakers

Distributor: Connecticut Electric & Switch Mfg. Co. (Connecticut Electric), of Puyallup, Wash.

Hazard: The recalled circuit breakers labeled “Square D” are counterfeit and could fail to trip when they are required to, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Connecticut Electric has not received any report of incidents or injuries associated with these counterfeit circuit breakers.

Description: The counterfeit circuit breakers are black and are marked as Square D products. Connecticut Electric has identified the following breakers as possibly being counterfeit: QO115, QO120, QO140, QO2125, QO215, QO220, QO230, QO240, QO250, QO260, QO1515, QO2020, QO3100, QO320, QO330, QO340, QO360, QOB120, QOB130, QOB220, QOB230, QOB250, QOB330, and QOB360. Actual Square D circuit breakers have (a) the amp rating written on the handle in white paint on the front of the breaker; (b) the Square D insignia molded onto the breaker side, and; (c) a yellow chromate mounting clip with half of the top of the clip visible. If your Square D breaker does not match this description, it could be counterfeit.

E. coli Illnesses

Federal and state authorities are investigating 21 cases of E. coli-related illnesses in 10 states. About half of those patients were hospitalized.

Nine of the 21 patients reported having eaten Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni topping "at some point prior to becoming ill," states General Mills.

The cases were reported to state health officials between July 20 and Oct. 10, according to General Mills.

E. coli bacteria can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody) and abdominal cramps. Most people recover within a week without treatment, but severe cases can occur and are more common in babies, elders, and people with weak immune systems.

The recall includes about 5 million pizza products that are in stores, as well as any that are in consumers' freezers, states General Mills, which makes both brands.

The recalled pizzas were produced in General Mills' Wellson, Ohio plant and distributed nationwide.

Totino's and Jeno's are working with health authorities to investigate the potential E. coli contamination.

The Hartz Mountain Corporation Recalls Vitamin Care for Cats Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Baconton, GA -- November 2, ,2007 ---The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats due to concerns that one or more bottles within the lot may have been potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, all of whom are at particular risk from exposure and should avoid handling these products.

Salmonella symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea in both cats and humans. Anyone experiencing the symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek immediate medical attention. Owners of cats exhibiting these symptoms should also seek veterinary assistance.

The product involved is 3600 bottles of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats, lot code SZ- 1637 1, UPC number 32700-97701, which was manufactured by a third party manufacturer, UFAC (USA), Inc., in Baconton, Georgia. While normal testing conducted by Hartz and UFAC has not revealed the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz products, sampling conducted by the FDA did detect the presence of Salmonella. Hartz is aggressively investigating the source of the problem.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Laugh & Learn™ Learning Kitchen™ Toys

Units: About 155,000

Importer: Fisher-Price Inc., of East Aurora, N.Y.

Hazard: Pieces of the faucet or the clock hands can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: There have been 48 reports of small parts separating from the toys, including two reports of children gagging on pieces, one report of a child who started choking on a piece and one report of a child who choked on a piece.

Description: The recall involves a play kitchen learning toy with a pretend refrigerator, range and sink. The product’s item number L5067 is stamped in several locations on the toy and printed on the product’s packaging above the UPC.

I have a question.

I only had one child. And I watched him like a hawk. I took him to the dr so much for bumps and such that they told me not to bring him unless he was spurting blood, unconscious, or broken bones. I told them I paid the bills I would bring him when I wanted to. Anyway...
I don't remember him putting a lot of things into his mouth after he got about 2 yrs old.
My question is, toys have a suggested age on them. If you have more than one child it means there will be some under that age of suggested limit. Is this why some are choking on things. Isn't this more of a personal thing rather than the company being responsible?

I've wondered the same, spydie. Like you I only had 1 son and yes I watched him constantly, where I was he was and I always made sure his toys were in the right age limit. I remembered slapping his hand several times when I would see him trying to put toys in his mouth. Maybe even a good butt swat now and then.

On the choking hazard I really don't feel a company should be held responsible. To me that is a parents responsibility. Now the lead paint is a totally different story. The manufacturer is responsible for insuring safe toys for our children to play with.

Wisconsin Company Recalls Beef Products

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- A company voluntarily recalled nearly 96,000 pounds of ground beef products after two people were sickened, possibly by the E. coli bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Saturday.

The beef products by American Foods Group include coarse and fine ground beef chuck, sirloin and chop beef. They were distributed to retailers and distributors in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Virginia.

The problem surfaced after an investigation by the Illinois Department of Health, which was looking into two reports of illnesses.

The bacteria is E. coli O157:H7. E. coli is harbored in the intestines of cattle. Improper butchering and processing can cause the E. coli to get onto meat. Thorough cooking, to at least 160 degrees internal temperature, can destroy the bacteria.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and people with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli.

The products subject to recall were produced on Oct. 10. They were distributed for further processing and repackaging and will not have the company's establishment number on the package. There needs to be a way to always trace where something starts no matter what it is.

Some of the recommended use-by dates have already expired. In that case, consumers can contact their retailers to see if the products in question were at stores. Consumers are also urged to look in their freezers and return or throw out the products if they find them.

The products include:
