Seems I been missin a few hits this year an think I found sumpthin that seems ta remedy that problem. Whilst usin circles have improved my hookup rate. I still am missin a few. This seems ta happen mostly with blues. My set up (bank fishin): Poles in holders an clickers set. Clickers set cuz I sometimes doze off or am wanderin around not payin any attention. Fish takes bait an runs like mad an reel's a buzzin. I kick on the brake an no fish. The sudden stop it gets when ya slam it in gear, seems like it just jerks the bait right outta its mouth. Solution: When the reels spinnin, take it outta the holder an then set the brake. Then let the fish load up the pole an pull back. Seems like that split second of tension release gives the hook time to turn, er sumpthin. Then the fish loads up the pole an ya got him. While I aint no expert, I feel like I'm slowly learnin what not to do. Meybe others already do this an I just kinda slow? Anyone else got any theories on this?

Ahhh....hookset percentages for blues......keeps ya awake at night, don't it? Here's some of my 2 cents worth: 1. Hookset rate clicker fishin: 1 in 2. Tight lining: 9 in 10 I put in a ton of hours bankfishin because I like it. Whenever I set up, I use various tricks to tight line, such as tying rods to trees on leashes, strapping rodholders to pier railings, old logs, etc. 2. Sometimes, like the day after a full moon, or when a front is getting close, blues do what I call "short-biting" I get hits, but keep pulling in baits that were cut in half. I've found that if I use the same size bait hooked the same way, but add a stinger hook 1 inch below the main one just hanging free, I will start picking up the short-biters. 3. Dinks. If little cats are messing with your baits, either use little hooks and be content fishin' for them, or pack up and move. That's the only way for that. 4.Turtles and gars: Turtles will nibble you to pieces, but gars will usually pick up baits, run like blazes for 100 feet, and drop them. If you want to see if there's gars biting, throw out a bait like normal, but just above the hook, tie a frizzy short piece of rope. The way gar's mouth's are, they can't get hooked on circles, but their teeth will get hung up in the rope and you can land them. Don't forget that a gar on a bank can still snap at you and shred an arm or leg in a second....... Perhaps that helps a little...........

Gar here dont run like mad. They bring the bait back to ya. Only thing I can figger is they on their way to the bank to feed offa the baitfish an just pick yer hook up on the way. Amazes me how they know just where I am??? Only gar I wanna hook is one of em alligator gar down south. Yanno, one of em 200 pounders! Woooooo!
I like the stinger hook setup. An reckon I'll try Tightlinin a lil more when I gonna be payin attention to my poles. Errrr, I mean, not nappin. hehe
And Dinks.... Depends on what ya consider a Dink? I consider a dink as bein 3# or smaller. I always just kinda figgered that blues run in schools an ya gonna have dinks an ya gonna have a bigger one or two. I never went ta school what there wasnt an adult somewheres in the group. ;D
