Maine is divided into eight distinct tourism regions, each offering unique activities, events and accommodations. With 6,000 lakes, 32,000 miles of rivers, 5,000 miles of coast and 17 million acres of forestland, there’s plenty of room to spread out and experience all Maine has to offer. Perhaps you'll discover a charming family campground tucked away along the shores of a pristine lake, a cozy weathered cottage on a bluff overlooking a sheltered cove, a rustic theatre offering entertaining performances somewhere off the beaten path, or a unique museum presenting an intriguing look into an important aspect of Maine history. Aroostook County In Aroostook, Maine’s largest and northernmost county, you’ll find an abundance of natural, cultural and recreational resources that will make for a memorable vacation in any season. In “The County,” you can bike along endless fields of potato blossoms; canoe and fish in one of the area’s 2000 lakes, rivers and streams; hike along glorious wooded trails; or cross-country ski and snowmobile through the beautiful winter landscape. While you’re here, join in the many festivals and fairs where residents celebrate their agrarian roots and the Acadian heritage that's still alive today. It’s only natural that travelers fall in love with “The County.” So come see it for yourself on your next visit to Maine and discover the other Maine—Aroostook. www.visitmaine.com/region/region_aroostook.php

Lighthouses were once the saviors of the seacoast. Their bright beacons and resonating foghorns cut through foul weather, warning ships of impending danger and guiding them safely back to shore. In this age of radar and GPS, lighthouses no longer have the life and death significance they once did, yet these distinctive structures still carry the romance and drama of their pasts. More than 60 lighthouses dot the Maine coast from the well known Nubble Light in York to West Quoddy Head, the easternmost lighthouse in the United States. www.visitmaine.com/tag/attractions/sightseeing_tours/lighthouse/

www.visitmaine.com/tag/attractions/sightseeing_tours/Culture, History & Museums Maine is full of surprises and little known historical facts. It’s a museum-lover’s diamond mine and home to more surviving forts than any other state. Many historic homes, among them Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s and Lucy Farnsworth’s, are preserved as museums. The Maine State Museum, in Augusta, highlights the history of the state and its people. Learn about Acadian culture in the St. John Valley. The Maine Maritime Museum is the quintessential porthole into the state’s nautical heritage. You’ll find history is fun when you cruise Moosehead Lake on the historic “Katahdin,” watch a bi-plane soar at Owl’s Head Transportation Museum, ride a trolley at the Seashore Trolley Museum or step back in time at Norlands Living History Center. www.visitmaine.com/tag/attractions/culture_history_museums/

People watching the tides come in... Large crowds gather here numerous times through the day my SIL said and listen to the "thunder" When the water crashes up on the rocks it sounds like thunder booming down! The top of the rock that the ocean is crashing into! They said that this one made a very loud BOOM!More of the waters!!
