Watermelons are well named:
They are 92 percent water. A 2-cup serving contains only 90 calories and is fat-free as well. Watermelon also is a good source of vitamins A and C.
If you grow your own watermelons this summer or buy them at the store, you’ll face the daunting task of determining their ripeness.
We’ve heard all sorts of advice, including the fact that a ripe melon, when thumped, will sound more like a human head than a human chest.

I heard some people talking other day that watermelons are gonna be around $5.00 a piece this year. I ain't paying that. I like em but I'd rather have cantaloupes.

When I first saw them they were $6.99 at Walmart and MarketPlace. No way. But I kept craving one. They went down to $5 at Save A Lot, so I got one. It wasn't even very big or real sweet, but still it was good. I ate the whole thing in two days.

I love watermelons, and I haven't seen any yet. I will check next week to see if the store has any. That is a lot of money for one watermelon.

I know when gathering watermelons you can tell if they are ripe by looking at where they attach to the plant. If the curl is a brown color I always been told they are ready.
When I was a child at home we raised watermelons. I don't in my garden. They take up too much room. Now I do have some space saver canteloupes planted. Pretty vines, covered in blooms and tiny little loupes on them. Bout the end of July or 1st of August I should have plenty of canteloupes.
