April 27 – National Arbor Day
Arbor Day
J. Sterling Morton, the originator of the Arbor Day idea, was among the many pioneers moving into the Nebraska Territory in 1854. With the decided lack of trees on the Nebraskan plains, Morton made it his cause to plant trees, not just for beautification but also to preserve the soil. He encouraged civic organizations to join in the effort, proclaiming the first Arbor Day in 1872. Today, the most common date for observances is the last Friday in April, although many states celebrate it whenever conditions there are best for planting trees.
**I have several little baby oaks trees in the backyard. I think I will let them grow.

I use to belong to the Arbor Day Foundation. They would always send me trees.
My maples in the yard I dug up as little babies about a foot tall. I found them in other places around here and transplanted them. They are over 20 ft tall now and that was only 5 years ago when I planted them. I give them a dose of ammonia nitrate once a year.
A few years ago they were giving away oak trees at a nursery in Greenfield. I got a few and planted them. I have 3 nice oak trees on the south and north sides of the house. They are slow growers, but hopefully will make good shade eventually.

joyce, I got 3 free dogwood trees about 8 or 10 yrs ago and I got them in a corner in the back yard and they have never bloomed and aren't very big. They green out real nice but wonder if some just don't bloom?? The single one I have in the front blooms like crazy.
