Are you familiar with the voices of the birds? There are 5 main calls: Song, mating call, young feeding, territorial call, and alarm. The first 4 are all "baseline" calls and if you are relatively "quiet" in the woods and non threatening, should be what you hear mostly.
Alarm call is usually one of the first four but in a higher pitch or faster, more 'alarming' tone. You can tell much from the calls along with the body language of the bird making the distress signal. Watch for bobbing of the head, 'pointing', tail bobbing etc. Also listen if the sound is coming from ground birds, or from the birds in the canopy. This will help you identify what is going on. If it is ground birds chances are there is some threat (from cat to bear to human in the immediate area) The immediacy of the call will also let you know the threat level. They will let you know everything going on!
Pay close attention to Crows and Jays. They are clowns and will do everything different from the other birds. FoxFire

This might not be the right place for this but we have a problem here. We have a wrens nest built inside of my excaust fan in the kitchen and it has hatched eggs so now there are babies in it. I really need my fan on( esp. with all this heat) but I guess my question is does anyone know of a way to move these without hurting them or the nest?

Let them grow up then they will fly far far away!
