No pictures, cause those are Sneaky Mammals, like humans...
Lost, I thought, two chickens to the fox. Turned out the one spooked through the fence by the hawk, lived on her own for 9 days, center city living. I did go round to the neighbors, unfortunately, I live in a Senior aged neighborhood. They don't call, they don't bitch, they dont' fling your trash back into your yard, they aren't fast enough to catch and KEEP one of your errant chickens.
Luckily enough, I DID give one neighbor our phone number. She called, as a hen showed up in her yard while she was watering.
Did I mention foot loose chickens are HARD to catch?
The flock was spooked by a hawk in the air. This chicken fled through a fence into the neighbors yard, two days before we had scheduled a vacation in Vegas. The next day, the head hen found a weird place to bed down. Somehow, in the middle of the night (please disreguard the 'somehow', we all know how, we all know I'm to blame.
Anyway, we got back, did better keeping track of the chickens, and... Wow, we had a Cooper's Hawk on the ground, tracking chickens! She was in the neighborhood before I ever brought them from my moms, so she is only doing what is in her nature... But really in a city the size of...173,556 (2000) you would think hawks don't eat chickens!
I saw her fly off with cargo below today.
I've spent time out of the Chicken Tractor with the hens from then on. Plus, I spent money to bring more hens into the flock. So, I spend time in the yard, protect my investment, and monitor the chickens NOT getting into the garden to eat my second planting tomatoes. We have had such unseasonably hot weather, tomatoes did nothing earlier in the year. I'm hoping for the season to run late, and still produce for me...
