2 Plead Not Guilty in Puppy Thefts
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Two men accused of stealing four Yorkshire terriers at gunpoint during a home robbery last month pleaded not guilty Wednesday.
Troy Cabral, 23, and Ryan Jason Betton, 19, surrendered last month after a videotape of the robbery aired on TV. Police recovered the pups and one adult dog and reunited them with their owners. Both men remain free on $100,000 bail.
They are accused of posing as prospective buyers Feb. 23 and making an appointment to see the purebred puppies, on sale for $2,500 each.
When someone opened the door, a robber pulled a gun and ordered the family of four to lie on the living room floor. A security camera recorded the scene as one man held a gun and another chased the puppies with a bag as they scampered around the room. No one was injured.
Cabral and Betton are each charged with four counts of first-degree residential robbery and grand theft of a dog valued at more than $400, along with one count of first-degree burglary with a person present. Cabral also is charged with personally using a handgun during the commission of a crime.
