Jul 7, 5:03 AM EDT Hundreds of Goats Die in Truck Crash SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) -- A livestock trailer carrying goats tipped over, leaving more than 240 of the animals dead and creating a grisly scene that shook onlookers and officials alike. Authorities said 243 goats died, many of them of suffocation, when the truck turned over Friday morning in San Rafael. The truck was transporting 400 of the animals, which had been rented by Golden Gate Seminary in Mill Valley, for brush grazing. When officials arrived at the scene, about 20 goats were grazing in a nearby neighborhood. "Our main concern is the remaining goats," said police Sgt. Mike Vergara. The 32-foot truck was from Orinda-based "Goats R Us." The driver, Ed Gibson, said he could feel a tire give out as he made his turn. "It's sad but when the goats freak out, the ones on top basically smothered the ones below them," said Elliot Katz, a veterinarian at the scene.
