CHESHIRE, Conn. -- A woman killed a raccoon with her bare hands Thursday when the animal attacked a young boy. Officials with Cheshire animal control say the woman was walking in the woods around 11 a.m. with a group of children when the animal bit the 5-year-old son of a friend. She pulled the raccoon off the child, told the children to run home and strangled the animal, authorities said. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/09/AR2007080902287.html

She is one brave lady. The sad part is going thru the treatment for rabies.

That woman sounds pretty tough. I would grab it off but don't think I could kill it with my bare hands. If they test it maybe they won't have to have all those treatments for rabies. Maybe the treatment for rabies isn't as bad as it used to be. Lets hope so.

Not sure, but I think the treatment is only one shot now. When we were kids, my brother was barefooted and a rabid cat attacked and bit him on the foot. He had to take the series of shots in the stomach. At that time, I found out that when an animal's head was sent to the lab for a rabies test that it would always come back positive for rabies because they were afraid that if they missed diagnosed that it would have tragic results. Nowadays, tests are much more accurate, and much less chance of messing up.

My daughter got bit by a unvaccinated dog in May & if the dog had rabies it would have been 5 shots in the stomache for 5 weeks. Thank God it was ok. I know how the lady felt,a few years ago a fox came in our yard when the girls & I were outside. Our dog attacked it & I took the girls inside & was ganna get the gun but I couldnt find the key so I called the mechanic to come get it. I found out later that if we had of shot or killed it we would have been arrested because foxes are protected. I thought that since it was in our yard,in town that it was just nuts.

Yeah, but what they don't know won't hurt ya... If you felt threatened for your life, you can shoot a person for self defense. I am sure that would be the same for an endangered species. Yikes, I guess those new shots haven't got around to everyone yet!! I hate shots too. In the belly?! oooooooooomg!
