Does anyone play stringed instruments? I have been practicing my Mandolin a lot here lately and I gots a problem!!! My fingertips are so sore and red & purple ... I know I have to get calluses built up but is there anything anyone can think of to relieve the pain? I am trying to learn The Wild Wood Flower... And if I put lotion on them I think it might defeat the purpose of calluses ... Any ideas?

I don't think it will hurt to put lotion on them. It' s more just getting your fingers used to it than actually building up calluses.Whenever I don't play for a while my fingers get a little tender when I do start again. There isn't any remedy I know that will help much other than practice. With a guitar you can go with a lighter gauge string and it makes it easier on the fingers.I don't know if that's an option on the mandolin,I don't play one often and I've only bought a couple sets and it seems like there wasn't much of a selection to choose from. God luck with your playing, the Wildwood Flower is one of my favorite songs to play on any instrument.

Sorry sweetie I don't know much about stringed instruments, just woodwind and a little brass and a little piano. I wish I could help. I have always wanted to learn guitar but never have yet. I guess just put them on ice right after ya get done playing for 5 or 7 Min's.

I think the thing is, is that the strings are very small and there are 8 strings (like on a guitar) but they are in groups of 2 so there are 4 sets of 2 and the tiniest one it the one that hurts my fingers the most It is the "E" and you have to use your tips of your fingers... My hubby plays Bass & my son can play anything... We just got him a 12 string Electric Acoustic for xmas.( but he got it early ) He could play it the minute he picked it up... !!! I wish I had that much talent!!!

Liquid skin, they also call it liquid bandage. But the problem with that is while you're working the strings, you're also rubbing it off.
The guy who's been giving me lessons said "you just have to learn to channel through the pain. Set your mind free and let the music flow."
I have no idea how you're supposed to do that or what makes him think I'm capable of doing it, but I nodded my head enthusiastically and thanked him profusely while batting my eyelashes. He seemed to enjoy that. I personally think he's a freak! But he sure does play some beautiful music. I tell you what though, he calls me "momma" one more time, he'll be wearing his guitar! Heck, he's older than I am! I guess it could've been worse, he coulda called me "Daddy O!"
