Okay, I made a statement here a while back, that later I felt very foolish about.
I talked about my .357 and reassured everyone I was trained to use it... Considerin' where I'm at, and who I'm talkling to, just How Stupid Was That?!?
Well, the 'other' places I frequent (and by now the Internet is a Global community) I run into folks all the time who can NOT conceive of owning a hand gun, a rifle, a pistol, or anything that is not rubberband powered!
I have more than a few times had to justify to 'friends' the gun safes in my home, and the amount of guns under my bed. I have been met with shock and disbelief. By now, I'm just a bit defensive.
When I grew up (none of this came out in my defense, its tough to work old stories into new ones...) I have shot a number of water moccosins, coyotes, and chicken murdering pilferers. Did anyone want to hear about them?
The place where I worked had a 'hobby' gun club, meaning air pistols for the most part. But aiming and pulling are pretty much the same where we're talkin' black powder, air, or the regular grain. I actually went through the local Police Pistol Range, and got College Credit for it!!!!! I also took my nifty nickol plated .357 through the last few classes of the course, and turned down a few offers to purchase. My gun comes with Pakmeyer grips (forgive me if I dont' get all the gear spelling right, I only know they are Packmeyers cause I've been told...) I prefer the orginal wood, as my hands are small. The aftermarket grips are too big for me to feel comfortable.
This was an important part of my growing up, as I took my used targets home on vacation one year, and showed them to someone who needed to see them. It made me feel better, and him feel threatened, I hope.
I've had my DH (Dear Husband, could mean other things, depending on the tone of what I am telling you about that sweet man...) enter our home, unexpectedly on a night he WAS NOT supposed to be home, speaking from the time he opened the door, Cena, its me. Don't Shoot me. Cena, its me. Don't shoot me... all the way up the stairs and into our bedroom. As my son aged, and became a total monkey with the ability climb, open, attack, force nearly anything, we bought safes.
I am just so astounded that I felt that defensive to automatically insert... Don't worry, I've been trained... when talking about my gun. Not just my gun. There are more than one gun in my home. I will NOT make a grocery list, cause thats just stupid and asking for someone to come knock on your door....
But, you know, young sailors have money twice a month. They spend it on stupid things, they WANT but don't NEED. When the money is gone, and they need to make a phone call, or want to have a date, or need to pay the guy they borrowed from last month, the first thing they think of is selling the stupid things they WANTED but didnt' NEED to someone else at a very good, decreased price. I always told my DH who had a wife with a Good Salary to pick up any of those types of things that would have a good resale value. I always instructed him on what had good resale, and we did very well.
We did turn down the offer to pick up the Dessert EAgle, and the multiple barrels, but I still have a dim idea where that would have been useful or helpful. But, we do okay in that buy/resell arena.
My first broken bone was obtained on the Rod & Gun club shooting range. We have good friends who bring all their gear, and if someone has a firearm we are interested in learning about, we swap and shoot. One of our guys has a reloading station, and is most interested in Black Powder. He sells brass on line, so, well, we go shooting at least twice a year.
I don't know if I mentioned that I am also involved, somewhat in the motorcycle community, and that most of the shooters get there on their bikes. Not to link the two together or anything...
Okay, I'm rambling and carrying on.
I'm sorry I brought up guns in that manner here.
I;m stunned that I thought it was a Big Deal.
I'm sure that many of you grew up learning how to shoot, and protect your family and possessions.
Not to mention, if you didn't hunt, sometimes you didn't eat.
Are things different in the country now?
I recently read about, and talked with CupCake about the recent Pandemic of meth in Missouri. How many folks NOW are armed?
Do elephants still live on TV antennas out in the country?
Joe always explained Midnight Target Practice with the Elephant Antenna correlation.
Did I mention my Step Dad was nuts, too? (That would be Joe.)
