5 1/2 cups old fashioned oatmeal 4 cups boiling water 1 pound lard (or recycled grease) 12 ounces peanut butter (optional) 3 1/2 cups cornmeal 3 1/2 cups grain or mixed bird seed
Cook 2 cups oatmeal in the boiling water. Add lard and peanut butter; stir until melted. Add rest of oatmeal, cornmeal and grain. Mix well. Cool. Shape into balls and put in mesh bags (like those onions or potatoes come in). Push a stick through the lower part of bag for birds to sit on. Hang them from a tree when vegetation is snowed under to feed your little feathered friends. Note: Recycle used household grease to feed birds in winter.
