Build A Backyard Picnic Table Text and illustrations by Thomas Klenck More from Popular Mechanics Nearly everyone enjoys eating outdoors. It's great to carry a blanket and basket into the countryside, but these days time-pressed families look more often to their backyards and decks--and to that quintessential piece of American outdoor furniture, the picnic table. While the familiar roadside park design has seats that are integral with the table structure, we opted for separate benches to boost utility in the backyard. Not only do benches make it easier to sit, but they can be pulled away for other uses, pushed in for storage or placed on top for cleaning underneath. We used cedar for this project, but redwood is a great choice if it's available in your area. Cypress is also weather resistant and may be a bit easier on the wallet. We finished our table and benches with a clear, water-repellent sealer to maintain the wood's color and prevent cracking and checking. That looks like it might not be too hard to do.
