Ok here goes..... Step 1 Cut all squares base color 9&1/2 inches by 9 &1/2 inches is a good size to work with. ( It will be a smaller square when finnished, so you could make it bigger if you want.) Cut all " Windows" I made mine 2&1/2 By 2 & 1/2 inches. Step 2 Fold all base color in half. ( mine is green) Print side in, Iron with hot iron, you can Iron them in sets of 16 ( cause that is usually one square when you are through. ) Step 3 sew up the 2 sides of the material. sew all the way from fold to open end.. I made mine a running stitch and continued till I had all 16 done ( both sides) Cut apart.. Now you have 16 pieces that are sewn on 2 sides. Now comes the fun part!!! Step 4 you want to open the squares and put the two sewn sides together. It will look almost like a little package. you want to sew those 2 sides and leave about 1/4 -1/2 inch unsewn. ( that is where you will turn it right side out.

Ok on to step 5 Yeah !!!! ;D You are gonna turn all 16 right side out and Iron into nice neat squares !!! Step 6 Now comes some hand sewing *( you could have sewn all of it by hand if you wanted to , takes a whole lot longer tho!!! ) Ok, take two corners ( Opposite ones caddy cornered) and stitch up making sure that it is sewn into a nice knot. As you can see you can put your finger in behind where you have sewn. Now fold up one more corner and attatch to the other two... It will look like an envelope when you are through with this step.. Now fold down last corner and attatch to the other three. you will have another square when you are done. ( about a 4x4 ")

Now onto step 7 You want to but the squares up against each other and sew ( either by hand or machine. I used machine and different colored thread so you could see.) You will do this to all the squares ( in pairs of 2 to begin with,) then you will sew 2 pairs of 2 together and make a block of 4 ( then of course you will sew 2 blocks of 4 together to make a square of 8x4 then sew the 2 8x4 together to make a 16 x 16 square) ( I just made it 4x4 to show you )

Ok now you turn your block over and you will be able to make out little diamonds in the material where it was sewn together. Now you will place the little " Windows " one in the center of each diamond. Now fold the edge of the diamond over the " window" and pin. you will sew the edge of the window by hand... Then sew around the edges... Until you have all 4 edges sewn I think out of your 16 square quilt it should take 12 windows; Then you will sew one square to the other one. Make a chain of 5 or 6 squares long. ( remember 16 squares sewn together makes 1 big square.) Depending on how large your quilt thats how many (16 square) blocks. Mine is 6 blocks accross by 7 blocks down which equals 42 ( 16 square blocks)( so it is around 96 inches by 112 " ) ( minus the big hole the dog put in it!!! ) Now everywhere you sew the squares together there will be an empty spot for a new diamond to be hand sewn in .. Hope this helps everyone. Hubby had a good idea. For those of you interested in making one I canmake a 4 patch and mail it to you so you can have a hands on piece to look at. So if you want one just let me know.

Cool! My "windows" are gonna be southwest prints in browns and black mostly, so I'm thinking solids in browns and black. I'll be checking out JoAnn's, got a really big one here, to see what they got on sale.

I am going to have to pass on this one. Maybe I should start out with something simple for my first one. But thanks for the offer. You made really good instructions and pics tho. It was clear how to do it and all, just afraid to start on something this hard...well, seems hard to me, as my first time. When I decide to do it, I will just sew some simple squares together. lol But I will have this one to come back to when I feel I might be able to do it. You did excellent job on tutorial !
