one thing that ive always heard alot of people say about smallmouth bass fishing is to remember that they are NOT Largemouth Bass and that Smallmouth Bass DO have a SMALL mouth !! Many anglers that i have run into through out the years fishing for smallmouth here on the river have said to me ""i use small baits even ultra light baits when fishing for smallies" and i usually HAVE to ask them why. usually the response i get is well smallmouths have a smaller mouth so they like to hit smaller baits and have trouble eating larger baits. This is a myth in my opinion, many times........ while cleaning a smallmouth......... i HAVE found the SMALLER live offerings (2-3 inch crawdads and 2-3 inch minnows) however MANY times i have found LARGE baits 5-7 inch creek chubs and 5-6 inch shad and BIG crawdads !! so dont always thinks SMALL when fishing for SMALLmouths !! dont be afraid when tube fishing for smallies and the bite is slow on the typical 2-3 inch tube baits to UPSIZE your tubes to the larger 4 - 4 1/2 inch baits.............many times this will INCREASE the amount of bites that you get and alot of time it will INCREASE the average sized fish that you catch also. the same thing applies when the bite is OFF on the smaller inline spinners ..............dont hesitate to grab a 1/4 to 3/8 oz willow leaf spinnerbait and give it a try ..........many times a LARGER spinnerbait has saved the day for me when the bite was slow on the smaller spinners !!! ive also had VERY GOOD LUCK throwing the larger 1/4 to 3/8 oz buzzbaits (black or white) when the smallies wouldnt touch the mini-buzzbaits !!
Every now and then .........Think BIG baits when fishing for SMALLmouths and i think you will see a increase in the amount of fish that you catch !!!
