With them wood-fired ones, and I dont see why one couldnt make their own outta an old gas heater. The manufacturers (for the ready made ones) claim they will heat onna minimum amout of wood. So it you got woods, then you prolly got old dead wood, ie, branches an wood scraps from projects etc.
I sent off once an got a brochure just to see and they send ya perty good detailed diagrams.

Hey, hows bout runnin a glycol based solution thru a radiator of sorts (inna collector) and down to yer water storage. Keep it all enclosed so ya dont contamiate yer water an either coil it around the inside or outside of a barrel.
I have a friend that rescued a couple big radiator thingys from his work, and we built a collector to house them. an he heated his swimming pool water with it. Just ran the poolwater thru it. But didnt use it in the winter, so no probs of freezing.

Now I have to really wait until car is payed off

Back in 1979 I spent a summer in mexico doing missionary work. Those "wood" fired water heaters are all over the place down there. (actually that's where they are made) They seldom burned wood though. There was no trash pickup and stuff like meat still came wrapped in paper. All the combustable trash was run through the water heater. When they needed a fire to hold a while they burned corn cobs in them.
Took less than ten minutes to have 15 gallons of water that would scald you if you weren't careful. In five minutes you could be in a warm shower. You didn't take long showers though, and baths were a better idea.
