I have about 500 gal of water stored in a 15 by 18 greenhouse. The temperature was 5 degrees. The greenhouse went down to 25 but nothing froze! When it gets cold for several days with no sun it drops more. It goes up to 80 even when its 5 otside on a sunny day and the water tempersture goes up a few degree from about 50 all winter! The water just gives enough heat to grow lettuce or other cole crops all winter1

That is so interesting!!! I am thinking about building a greenhouse. What do you have your water stored in? and exactly where are they stored in the green house ? Is your green house in the direct sun or indirect sun? I have a little knoll that I would like to build on cause the ele. Co. cut all the trees down and made a nice opening and it gets sun all year long...

face the house so the morning and noon sun hits it! Put the water any where in barrel or plasic bins. Put the water under a table that you use to put your plannts on and in the summer it will cool it and winter it will warm it! You can even put a stack of bricks or a few block.! dig a two foot hole and put a barrow at the bottom of the hole with it above the hole any distance and the water will maintain about45 degrees from the ground temp at frost level. Lots of weays to save heat. Put insulation at the bttom of most barrel o buckets so it does not loose heat as fast at night. you must have 2 layers of plastic seperated by a inch or two to make it insulate better. One layer will not hold the heat! Insulate the north side where no sun comes in! I would say 500 gallons for a 12 by12 green house will work well! Black color or dark green absorbes heat best. Using white plastic or foam on the north side reflex light and makes plants grow better! Metal bucket or barrow absorbe heat faster than plastic but also release it quicker. Lots of fun . Get a temperature gage that shows then low and high for the day and you will know how cold it got. Try nt to let the temp go above 100 or it may hurt the plants! Keep a open bucket of water to add humidity and it also keeps the plants wet but too much will cause mold! Try to put plants off the ground so the small critters do not eat your crops!
