#1 Containers ...waterproof and bug proof......restaurant supply houses......Check online, most don't need a tax number to sell to you. Also google Lexan and Cambro, they are 2 companies that sell these type of containers for restaurants. Most are white or clear. i have some for my Flour, Sugar, Rice, pwdered and brown sugar...big ones because i buy in bulk from...... #2 Costco...try costco.com they have some food items online, just not sure how many and what. Its a members only club like Sams but better quality products. Jim and I drive to either Charleston or Myrtle Beach to do our stock up, that's about 120 miles one way but still worth the trip. we save that much over wally world. The cheapest membership is $50, the next one is $100, which i have because it gives you 2% back after a year, every year. Don't know how close you are to Pittsburgh, but there are 3 Costcos there. Speaking of Pittsburgh..... #3 Mylar Bags........ there are three places in Pittsburgh which you can either order over the phone and a few might have online sights by now. They are... Schorin's, Feinbergs and Pittsburgh Cut Flower. Pittsburgh Cut Flower is a wholesale Flower place which also has supplies, like mylar. i used to work there and you can call, place an order and they will ship it UPS. Just tell them you have a business, a cash account, make up a name they'll still sell to you. Cash Account just means you pay with a check or credit/ debit card for your order. Schorins has all kind of mylar, styrofoam and tissue plus about a thousand other items used for restaurants and flower shops. Fineberg's has some mylar stuff, and all knids of Steeler, Pirate and Penguin stuff. their Mylar at least last time i was there was, sheets, rolls and shredded, not sure if they had bags.
Any questions for me, pm and i can give you more info........

Thank you bunches MS Kitty ! I was looking at Costco last night and also sams. They both send some things thru online... We have a sams about an hour and a half away but not sure about costco. I am about 6 hours or so from Pittsburgh. Aint been there since mum passed away . which has been about 8 years. I'll check out those places. Also do you mill your own grain? was thinkin about this also cause when Hubby aint here I don't cook much and whole grains and coffee beans, and stuff like that would last a lot longer...

No, Don't bother with the milling.....i have to have decaf coffee and decaf beans are too expensive.... We do make our own bread now 'cause i hate the walmart brand or their bakery stuff isn't as good as what i was used to in the 'burgh. We had this great Italian bread company, Mancinis, that makes the most awesome breads, rolls and goodies. They will ship stuff to you but i find it easier to make the bread when i need it. I'm not much of a baker than that, even my cookies come out funny..

Those are fairly good prices on those containers. Sometimes restaurant suppoes have them a little cheaper but they look great for what i think you want, like us, the ablity to buy in bulk and not have the dry goods get buggy or wet.

;D LOL an outpost on the frontier in the making !! Just kidding you Snowflake...When I was a young lad, My Mom and Grandmother was always stocked for several months in advance. Sugar, flour, coffee, salt were always bought in large bulk bags.Sugar would most always be in lumps and be grind in the salt and pepper grinder before it could be used...Got smacked several times sneaking a lump out to the barn to enjoy....The flour and sugar sacks would be reused to make shirts or dresses out of..They would get angry if they couldn't find the bags with the same pattern when the would go into the store...

My granny was the same way. dad said once a month they were lucky enough to get "real " Ice cream from the store. That is if they did all their chores and everything.. I want to be completely self sufficient eventually .... But until then I would like to get my larders stocked... GC I think I was born in the wrong era ! LOL

I buy the pearl barley, mostly for soup. I make for one thing Beef barley soup, it's really easy. I don't have an exact recipe but here's the ingredients. Beef (chunked like for stew) beef base water diced tomatoes celery carrots (diced small) onions barley salt, pepper, garlic Soak barley overnight, or for at least 4 hours.season the beef, brown it, add the celery onios and carrots, cook until onions are transparent.cover with water, add tomatoes . cook until it tastes good, add barley you're done. It's very good i usually serve it with italian bread or baquettes and butter....... You can substitute barley in almost any soup for noodles or rice. I have even mad Italian Wedding soup with it. It sticks to your ribs and is good for you. You can also serve it as a side dish, like rice or noodles, I usually flavor it with base from whatever i serve it with, chicken, beef or pork, salt pepper and other spices.
