Ok need an opinion from some friends. I am currently comparing rifles for Hubby. His next job out he wants to purchase a nice rifle. one that can be used for hunting deer as well as Elk. If he manages to go west on next job he serriously wants to do some hunting. So here a couple of guys are saying the 243 is a good one. Then there are others telling him a 270 , And since I have never hunted with anything other than a shot gun or 30-30 I am not real sure what the advantages of each one are. Does anyone here know about these two ? or even what an overall good rifle would be? So there is my question, any opinions ? Or even web sites I can compare guns with ? Oh and the only requirement is NO synthetic stocks ! Thanks guys

Hmmmmm I guess we are either opionless OR not hunters...... I think this link will help! I like the 270 since it seems to be a better all around gun with less drop and more accuracy. Check out this link! +++ www.chuckhawks.com/270family.htm

It has been far too long since I have touched a gun, so I am clueless. But I could ask my brother in a couple of days when I see him, if you like. He is an AVID hunter and a fire arms instructor.

I have a 243 an a 270 as well as a 300 magnum. For smaller critters like deer the 243 is great. But for elk and bigger, the 270 or 300 mag.For pure stopping power and knowck down the 300 mag is the best bet.Sheep, bear moose elk are a good for the the 300 mag.Since elk and sheep are usually long range targets, still the 300 mag.Hope this helps.

I would go as far as to say the 270 is really on the light side for an Elk, I had a friend who hunted elk for years with his 270, and almost lost the biggest trophy of his life because he didn't have enough gun to finish the job. IT took 11 shots to finally stop that elk. He bought himself a 300 mag not long after that hunt, and now uses his 270 for deer and nothing larger. Dave

The 300 mag for out west most times.....The 270 for your local use...The 300 is a BIT much for where he hunts most around the hill side....

We have a 300 and it is one of those you are lucky if you find a box of shells type deals !!! Especially round here. still workin on the gun thing. Did get him a 54cal. Hawkins muzzleloader for christmas. All excited over that one ! Now he wants ME to make him some traditional clothes. ( think I can buy some and pass em off as mine LOL ) Guess when we get to Utah we are gonna go to a rendezvous. might be kinda fun !!! Least ways someone will be able to put me in touch with a good gunsmith to have a few older guns of my dads fixed.
