Most people know that aluminum (in the form of beer cans, piepans, foil, etc.) can be sold to "recycling centers" for about 18¢ per pound. "What most people don't know," says Jeff Friend of Lexington, Virginia, "is that a wide variety of other metals- including brass, copper, lead, steel, and iron-can be cashed in' too ... and that it's not at all difficult to round up $50 worth of 'junk' metal in a single afternoon." You may not believe this, but for the last 12 years I've been turning brass, aluminum, copper, iron, steel, and lead into gold. No, I'm not an alchemist ... I'm what's known in the trade as a junker. I comb the local dumps (and the countryside) in search of scrap metal ... then sell that scrap to dealers who are willing to pay me anywhere from $1.75 to $40 per 100-pound load of the material www.motherearthnews.com/Modern-Homesteading/1978-03-01/How-To-Earn-500-a-Month-Recycling-Metals.aspx

Im sorry ta say, but all the crackheads also know this an are doin it without permission. Just last night I gotta call at work I had someone at my house. Luckily the neighbor chased em off. Neighbor lives just a lil over a 1/4 mile away. They aslso tried to rumage around his house as well. They seem to cruise the roads lookin for someone not at home so they can cart off anything that will weigh enuff to sell. I heard today where a feller found tire tracks in his barnlot where they had just drove up an hauled off most of the wiring in his barn. Great things, them cell phones. Now you can be dropped off to shop then call in yer ride to haul everything off. Almost weekly I get asked to just let someone haul off my junk an get it outta my way. I like my junk an if I want it hauled off, I think I can manage. I aint a happy camper.

Out here we got them stealing the copper wire from traffic signals and street lights. The law is finally beginning to catch up with them and arrest them while they're doing it, just about an arrest every week it seems. Now they gotta figure something to do about the scrap yards that know it's stolen and buy it anyway.

we have a guy that works with hubby who gathers up every lil scrap he can cause on big jobs like these ethanol plants when they cut the wire they throw all bits and pieces on the ground. then in the end it gets buried or thrown in a dumpster.

They are tightening up around here with laws being passed about selling copper.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A bill aimed at stopping copper thefts swept the state House.
House Bill 2433 will put into place many safety measures the folks at PSC Metals in Nashville already enforce.
With the bill people bringing-in scrap metal will be required to present a photo ID, have their picture taken and then be entered even into a data-base.
The new law, which goes into effect Oct. 1, 2008, will force sellers of copper, catalytic converters and air conditioner coils to wait five days before being paid by a scrap-yard.
"We get broken into twice a month. So, we're in this. We're in this just as much as the person that has their air conditioner stolen or the tubing cut out of their home. It's just, responsible safeguards," said Jason Avery of PSC Metals, LLC.
Copper's going for an unbelievable $3 a pound, and some speculate copper thefts are up because there are more copper sources to choose from.

I hate to write this but I must. I'm a jack of all trades but I love scrap processing.Iv'e took off from my family along time agao.Like I was ownly a teenager.I payed my way through High School by processing scrap and my home I lived in and all bill's for life as a 14 teen year old boy on his own. Everything I have even to day I pay cash all I can. I never take from our govermant cause there lier's and thives. Iv'e even give money and things to people who have not one way to make it out there even now today. And help them start over again.I'm sorry the meds Im on make it hard for me to say what I want. Please for give me.But tho's who steal should be punish. And all that scrap out there is killing our world ,our wild life, and everything on this earth. I look at it this way. I'm not a low life scraper.I'm a world wide life renewer. And I'm making this world a better place to live and showing people how to live on there own instead on making someone eals rich.with there short time in life on the earth. There are days I make up to 780.00 in one day.And I mean I start the day with not thing to work with. And the cash is tax free.It would take more than this little forem to show you the right way to process poeples junk and I won't.I may be cripple up now and other stuff. But I can still start at first dust in the morring and by 12:00 noon make any where from 35 dollars to 750.00 dallors. If I would have people out in the forest to do my work for me I would teach them. but once again. It ownly takes a month and thay leave me and use what I have showed them. The rest of the story is this.Thay become my new competers.I do work so everyone makes money not just me.Even the people who give me free scrap to clean and hall away.HHmmmm maybe thats why thay call me befor any body eals out there. And I'm not just talking here in Wisconsin.I get calls from people all over the states. I don't own a punch clock. But I do own a great life. It's just now truning bad cause I'm crippled up.But I can tell you this much I will win what is keeping me down and I will still injoy all things in life with out working for the fat cats and there greed.Iv'e been there done that and will never do it again.

I dont think this theread was intended to put down scrapping. Instead it was posted as a way to make extra money. I scrap off an on as well. cept I come by my junk honestly. As well as the rest of us do. I was just pointing out how the punks are stealing stuff to scrap without permission. And I have been havin problems with such as of recently. No problems here with honest junkers.

It isn't very easy to scrap anymore without investing money now. Seems people are figuring out what scrap metal is all about and how much it is worth. Now, when you want to scrap something off of someone's house, you gotta bid on the stuff around here. Scrapping is a big business in Minnesota, and other places I am sure.

Rusty, with scraping, as with so much other work out there, the bad scrappers give everyone that makes their living doing it a bad name. With prices on it what they are, there's a bumper crop of thieves and dis-honest buyers. Unfortunately, they will make life that much harder for honest scrapers like yourself. Hopefully, someday, the law may find a way to deal with them. HUGS

On the news this weekend, I saw a story where a recycling center turned in 2 indivivduals who were trying to sell stolen goods. Turns out these thieves had stolen the metal name plates off of gravestones and tried to sell them. Nice to know these guys got busted.

Yes this thread was started with the good intentions of showing everyone a way to make a little honest extra cash. Just like digging ginseng in the fall. There is also a market for may apples. and a few other wild herbs, My father digs Ginseng every fall, Morell mushrooms every spring along with ramps. They sell really well back home. there is a way to make a lil exra cash in everything you do. Just like my weld hats , do rags & headbands. I sell them to the welders on every new job. ( and it gives me something to do) Happy recycling guys!
