Yup, its bout that time again. Hunting the wild mushroom. Namely Morels. I know its hunting, cuz ya dont go pickin or scavenging or foraging. No, rather ya always go hunting for shrooms, or mushrooms. Also its time for ticks to be out in full force. I kinda believe that the ticks are guards for mushrooms, since the shrooms dont have any kinda natural defense system in place. Once ya find a tick, ya automatically think ya found several more scampering all over yer body, which in turn takes yer mind off of what you were set out to hunt for. If you can get by the tick guards and find a mushroom, look all around nearby. Alotta times several more will be close by. Not always tho. Sometimes I have found as many as a dozen in a fifty foot radius. Other folks brag bout finding hundreds in a patch. I also know that the same type of folks fish as well. And well, ya know the big one that got away........ Another thing I dont understand, is why anyone would count that many. I stop counting after my hat or shirt tail is full. I will let ya in onna lil known secret on where to look for mushrooms. Try looking near dead trees, live trees, buck brush, honeysuckle, may apples, apple trees, elm trees, oak trees, walnut trees, (but not so much evergreen trees) green grass anything else green or brown or any combination of such. And or where ever you find a tick or group of ticks. If ya find a big group of ticks, you can bet their protecting sumpthin.
Meybe we can find some recipes ta put in the wild game section.
Happy Hunting!!!!

There sure must be a lot of mushrooms somewhere around here, then, because I have already gotten 4 ticks off of me! I never knew how to look for mushrooms .... to tell the poisonous ones from the good ones, but always wanted to. My dad always said it was too dangerous and wouldn't show us how when we were kids. But I see so many around here and always wonder if I am missing out on some good eating. Then I hear about someone that just kicked one and died from inhaling the spores that flew up in the air, it was that poisonous! Still wish I knew, beyond any doubt though, which were the good ones and which weren't. I have a few mushroom recipes, but they are for the ones you buy at the store, don't know if it would work the same. How do you generally cook them? ..... the ones you "hunt"

I generally just split em in two and soak em in saltwater for a spell ta soak out the bugs and other critters then Dip em inna egg/milk batter and roll in flour/salt/ pepper, then fry em. Nuttin special. Folks round here eat a "red" mushroom. I couldnt tell ya nuttin bout it. Never had one. They say they get BIG. An I've seen pictures in the paper of huge ones. I'll just stay with what I know. And thems the Morels.

Bought me a morel kit an made a nice veggie egg compost pit for it. smells so sweet when I stir it up. Figure if it flushes in the early spring, I can use the mycelium to start a BIG patch

A feller in town showed me a order form for them, the other day. I didnt know you could grow em on purpose. Most mushrooms havta be grown inna petri dish or in poo. Well, I guess them shitaki can be grown in little oak logs.

I looked up what a morel mushroom looked like. I have never seen one of those around here .... only on pictures. They look good, though. We have lots of other kids growing all over around here, especially on rotted tree stumps, but I would be afraid to try them. Some look just like the ones in the grocery store. Some are big around, flat and kind of orange (actually pretty scary looking). Then there are those goofy looking 'puff' balls just laying on the ground that you can't figure out how they got there. And you sure don't want to step on them because when you do, a big smoke puff instantly rises up and you get woozy and dizzy for a few minutes. Can't be good. But if I ever come across any of those morel ones, I will probably try them.

Man o man I got into em today (Sat.) I picked more than I think I have ever picked at one time, in my whole life. And didn't even get outta the yard. That warm ground and all that rain musta triggered em off. Three whole shopping bags full. And no, I ain't gonna count em either. After yer hat gets full, counting is kinda pointless, ta my way of thinkin. We tried ta catch some fish ta go with em tonight but no luck.
(I've had the scours for the last week. I spect they wont clear up anytime soon after i get done workin these shrooms over. ) ;D

Don't think I have ever eaten any morel mushrooms. My brother has always been able to hunt them down and fix em up but I have yet to be at the right place at the right time to get a bite of one.
