Used to hang out with old Mr Louis and do stuff like learn about the areas plants and animals, listen to his bamboo patch grow, pick berries listen to him bout his bees, only watched him once thought he was nuts. Went fishin, mostly for bream, but whatever bit got ate.
I was probly 12 maybe 13, we go for a walk on a Sat with some cane poles and a bucket o crickets, headed to his sweet spot. Bout a mile and a half down the road we came upon this poor dog, ran over by a cer, dead, not bloated bad yet, but it was summer, and it would be soon. here this old guy 92? pops out a length of strapping from a pocket and wraps up the back legs. Handin me the strap he says" Not quite a mile, and you can drink my tea." So I am dragging this dog but i have no clue as to why, and despite several questions all I got was "you will find out." So we get to his little hole up the side of the pond off the dirtroad abou 100 yards, a nice deep spot, almost a cove on the side close to the dam. He takes the strap away from me and thows it over a limb, pullds the end in with a stck, pulls the dog up with my help. I was tired but the dog wa abt 40 pounds. He ties it off. im puttin a cricket on a hook, and hes like " no boy" we come back tomorrow late" With the rest of the day ahead of me cause it was only around 10 I didnt care.
Went back around 4 the next day throwin worms. Caught a fish every time a worm hit the water. Lots of big Bream, some crappie, as well as a few bass as well. mostly the biggest bream I have seen. Three 5 gal buckets of fish in 2 hrs.
We cleaned em till midnight
