Friend asked if i wanted to go fishin' at the lake Saturday evenin'...said a coupla' of old fishermen had told him of a great catfishin' spot...friend isn't necessarily into catfishin' and neither are the old fishermen now (although one of 'em usta' be when he was younger) - they're all too impatient to just cast and leave it alone - they're all into crappie fishin' - but this friend knows i love catfishin'...so i said "sure, why not?"...
Good thing he drove 'cuz we woulda' had to walk from the main road if i had....my vehicle just ain't high enough...he has 4 wheel drive...to call it a cow path would be a huge exaggeration which would make it far nicer than it was...ya coulda' probably been on the right track in callin' it a mountain goat path......it was steep and had all the potential to be an oil pan ripper or axle buster...i mentioned that if a person did rip their oil pan or somethin', they'd hafta' wench the truck to the top, 'cuz no wrecker could possibly get down there...path was too narrow with no place for somethin' bigger than what we were in to turn around...as it was, it took about a 15+ point turn for him to get it turned around.....
Path was sorta' steep with big ol' bolders juttin' up that had to be driven around...which wasn't as easy as it might sound because of the overgrown woods crowdin' the path.......the pay-off travelin' the 2 mile mountain goat path was that no one was fishin' there...only someone who knew about the cove and was real serious 'bout gettin' there would even attempt to get back in that place....ya sure wouldn't accidentally stumble across it...and when the water's up, there wouldn't really be any place to bank fish 'cuz of all the brush...since it's not, there was a nice lil' area to fish from....
After all that....nothin' was biting, not in that cove anyway...fished 5 hours with absolutely nothin' goin' on...did get to watch a beaver playin' around the on bank and in the water...and fed a coupla' turtles...nice evenin' with big ol' puffy clouds though and the skeeters weren't out...so Mother Nature was at least kind on that score.....
Think if a body hadda' boat, which the fishermen who told of this place do, it mighta' been an okay place to fish...3 or 4 hundred yards out, there were some submerged trees stickin' up...sat and watched smaller fish flippin' outta' the water like they do when big fish are feedin'...saw a few nice sized fish jumpin' outta' the water too, but they looked like carp....
Fishin' buddy's only been seriously tryin' to fish for a coupla' years and hasn't had much luck catchin' any keepers, but i guess he's a great bait fisherman (says he catches a lot of perch but i've never seen it the few times we've fished together)....i know the fishermen who told him about the place fairly well (we've talked fishin' a lot down the line), so i asked him. "ya sure this is where they said it was really great catfishin'?"...him: "oh yeah, this is it all right, they showed me the time we went when their boat wasn't workin' right..."...me: "did you guys catch anything down here?"...him: "just one small walleye"...me: "i think they lied to you, just to see if you'd drive down that path"....him: "they wouldn't have any reason to lie to me about it"...i said, "haven't they told you 'bout lesson one in fishin'?...fishermen never, ever tell you the complete, total truth about much of anything, but they for sure never, ever tell anyone about their good fishin' spots"...him: "i really don't think they'd lie to me".... ...he's a very trusting and naive soul....
Maybe someday he'll learn the truth about us fisherpeople........
(posted this first in "catfish," but got to thinkin' 'bout it and since it involves no actual catfish, moved it "tales"....)
