I got this here grill/griddle for the taking. Cept it has a coat of rust on it. Prolly somethin to do with the free part. Anyhow, it sets over two burners on the stove. Not near as big as the one I grill on at work, but prolly good nuff for me.
So sand paper or brillo pad or wire brush or WD-40 or sand blast or what. It don't have no pits on it yet. Just peers ta be a fine rusty coating.

is it cast iron? 'cuz if it is, ya don't wanna' be usin' any of the stuff ya mentioned! good ol' google to the rescue...google "how to remove rust from cast iron cookware" or somethin' similiar....seems like ya get the cast iron wet then take coarse ground salt and scrub it down with that, but don't do it til ya google 'cuz it's been a while since i read about cast iron....but for sure, don't use anything real abrasive!....
my newest cleaning discovery (for the commercial stainless steel appliances i gotta' clean) is undiluted pinesol.....works like magic....might just work on your new rusty grill too.....

after ya get it cleaned, don't forget to season it with oil, or it'll rust out again...

No! Please no! Cast iron doesn't require power tools!!!! And ya probably ought not use pinesol on it either...less ya wanna have an underlying taste of pinesol after ya start usin' it, once it gets de-rusted. If ya wanna' hear what someone said in a thread about cleaning and seasoning cast iron: Good and flavorful cast iron is not dirty!!!
If you bought a skillet that is not silver in color, then it has already been seasoned. Just follow normal cast iron guidelines.
If you want to season a pan so it tastes like something (the factory seasonings leave a lot to be desired) you can easily do that at home. Scrub the black baked on fat off the pan until it looks like a raw piece of metal.
If it has incurred any rust from poor care/lack of oiling you can sand it off to show bare metal. Rub vinegar on the spots you removed rust. Rinse with water.
Now with your clean and rust free pan or pot, spread some type of fat or oil all over it. You may want to have a heaver and a lighter skillet one seasoned with lard and another with bacon fat, or whatever your heart desires.
Bake it at 400* for an hour, and repeat for 3 - 5 coats.
Enjoy a pan that will impart real flavor into your food. I've used rendered bacon fat to season a tortilla warmer and a larger skillet, pig shoulder fat on another pan, and vegetable oil when recovering a friends rusted skillet.Rest of the thread here: www.reddit.com/r/Cooking/comments/bvj06/seasoning_and_cleaning_cast_iron/And then there's this: www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/how-to/how-to-clean-a-cast-iron-skillet-home-hacks-107747• Using soap, steel wool, or other abrasives is not the end of the world, but you may need to re-season the skillet. If the skillet is well-seasoned from years of use, a small amount of mild soap may be used without doing much damage – just be sure to rinse it well and oil it after drying. • Remove rust using steel wool or by rubbing it with half a raw potato and a sprinkle of baking soda (seriously, it works!). Again, it may be necessary to re-season the pan.

Ha, I was just kiddin bout the power tools. ;D I think its perty new. Not any black on it. Mite notta even ever been seasoned. I'll try the paper bag then if it dont work, I got these nifty lil black scrubby things I get from old floor scrub pads. Really rough plastic fibers. I kinda remember Ma using a paper sack to clean iron with. It'll all work out. But thanks anyhow.
